In Spanish we went to Park Elementary for 2 Tuesday and we worked with bilingual kids. All we basically did was talk with them in Spanish and also go to their classes and help them learn and I even helped my kid’s teacher a little. To prepare for this in class we did a lot of talking in Spanish with the peers and also went over some of the things we had learned earlier in the year and even last year. Simple things like asking question and relearning of the basic questions like how old are you and what your age is.
I had so much fun going to Park! The first day I met my little, Elizabeth, she was so shy. She barley walked up to me and I was just sitting there trying to get her to come to me. Once she did I tried talking to her but she was very quiet. It was understandable because she was only a Kindergartener. After we did an ice-breaker we started to head off to her class. By this time she was really opening up, I think because when we went to her class all of the other girls liked me and since I was there with her she was happy. When we went back I was oh so very excited! I got there and she was just sitting waiting and gave me hug when I got in the door like we were old time friends. Everything seemed to just the way it was, like I didn’t even leave. I got to help her with her math and go to recess with her and everything and it was just a blast.
I think that bilingual students are just amazing! I only know about 5 now but they know two languages and that astounds me! I barley know English and they know English and Spanish. I think that it does make them smarter because they are always switching their brains to talk in a different tongue. Bilingual students will always face something in their life that will be challenging. But that is everyone, everyone will face something hard. With what I said early, that they are really smart, I think that they can deal with any situation with an extra oomph than anyone else could.
This experience has affected me in so many ways, the first way is that it was making me rethink about if I wanted to teach older kids compared too little. Working with Elizabeth was an eye opener; I got to see what it would be like helping a little kid when I have always only helped older kids with their homework. As a language learner it made me fell weak and I need to pump up my game to compete with little kids. My highlight during this whole thing was just being there with Elizabeth. Her holding my hand and her other hand has a finger on her lips telling me and the other kid to be quiet in the hall was just exhilarating I am so happy that I got to go and I don’t think I would really change anything about my experience.
As you can see I just had a blast during this whole thing! From running in the sun outside to sitting next to a little helping read a math problem I loved it all and I would love to do it again! I am just glad I got to experience that when some people haven’t.
